Lost (2004-2010)

The great gamble that paid off: a six-season puzzle on an epic scale, with scores of characters and intricate plotting that truly put the myth in ”mythology.” Lost altered our view of the size and shape and momentum a TV series could maintain. When it ended, it was common to say that there’ll never be another show like it. I prefer to think the lesson of Lost is that another unique experiment can come along and become a mass-audience favorite.

3. LOST

ABC, Tuesdays, 9–10 p.m.

KEN’S TAKE: The final season is taking its shape from not only its much-bruited ”flash-sideways” sequences but also the decision to focus part of each episode on an individual character. So far, the result has been rich storytelling that’s giving up more secrets with every hour, as the series comes to what looks like a triumphant climax.

WHAT’S NEXT: Ding-dong, the Temple’s gone. So now what? Lost‘s castaways will be asking that very question as they decide whether to join Un-Locke/the Monster (Terry O’Quinn) in his quest to flee the Island. Also on tap: a flashback episode for Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell), and a Sideways-world episode for Ben Linus (Michael Emerson).

Nobody could have predicted what this cult favorite had in store when audiences first met the survivors of Oceanic 815 in 2004. With its fragmented narrative and realistic treatment of unrealistic, supernatural and mind-bending subjects, this character drama has continually shocked and devastated us. Every new episode feels like an event. Here’s hoping the final chapter in the saga will be as satisfying and mind-blowing as the ones that preceded it.

Sure, Lost‘s time-tripping fifth season was the most difficult to follow (at times even we had headaches and nosebleeds), but it also provided many weighty moments for the characters we’ve grown to love. Sawyer took on a leadership role and gave his heart to Juliet; Hurley helped Miles reunite with his long-last father; Jack finally tested the water of being a man of faith; and John Locke is, well, still dead. Throw in the introduction of Jacob and the death of Daniel Faraday, and it’s no wonder why we’re so eagerly anticipating the next and final season.
