by Peter Martin Apr 9th 2009 // 10:02PM

2. Matthew Fox

Before the current season of Lost, I would not have nominated Fox for this list, but I think I was guilty of associating the actor too closely with the character. Jack Shepherd has been pompous, self-righteous, and insensitive for years, and Fox played him to a T. This year, however, Jack has displayed a humble, more tender side, and, again, Fox has captured every nuance, which is a reminder that he did under appreciated, yeoman work as “the responsible one” on Party of Five. He appeared in two movies last year: he was lost (no pun intended) in the crowd in Vantage Point, and Speed Racer woefully underperformed at the box office. Still, he has bright prospects for the future. An indie comedy might be just the thing for him.

5. Ken Leung

I’ve sung the praises of this fine actor before, and I will continue to do as long as he continues to deliver the goods. Since my original article appeared, Leung has taken on the prickly Miles Straume on Lost, and has demonstrated his comic chops and intense dramatic persona in a fairly small role (next week’s episode will reportedly focus more on his character). Since Lost is filmed in Hawaii, his availability for other roles may have been somewhat limited, but I certainly hope he will get to do more and bigger parts in movies.

6. Lance Reddick

Really, the entire list could have been filled to overflowing with any number of marvelous actors from The Wire, but I’m picking Lance Reddick because his two most notable post-Wire jobs (Lost, Fringe) haven’t shown his range. As he demonstrated as Cedric Daniels in The Wire, Reddick can ramp it up from restrained to explosive in a heartbeat; he can also play warm, charming, and romantic. He’s played plenty of authority figures, so we know he can do that with aplomb, but I’d love to see him in a comedy: he’d be a great, beleaguered father with misbehaving children and a bemused look in his eyes.

left viewers with a whopper of a burning question: How did Kate, Sayid and Hurley end up on that Ajira Airways flight when they seemed so opposed to doing so? Did the mysterious Matthew Abaddon (Lance Reddick) have anything to do with it? TVGuide.com talked to Reddick about what exactly we’ll learn about Abaddon next as he plays a significant role in “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” (Wednesday, 9 pm/ET, ABC). In the meantime, Reddick offers up some juicy insight:

WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT MATTHEW ABADDON?
Thus far, Abaddon has helped assemble the team that came to the island from the freighter. He visited Hurley in the booby hatch to ask about the rest of the Oceanic 815 passengers. And he convinced a wheelchair-assisted Locke to go on a “walkabout” through the Australian Outback.

WHAT DOES HIS NAME MEAN?
Although Matthew means “a gift from God” in Hebrew, the Bible assigns Abaddon many not-so-cheery meanings, including “a place of destruction” and “the realm of the dead.” The word is also described as a creature that resembles a centaur with long hair, locusts’ wings and the tail of a scorpion. All in all, scholars have roughly interpreted all this to mean that he’s the king of hell, the anti-Christ, the big guy: Satan.

SO HE’S A BAD GUY THEN?
When asked this very question, Reddick chooses his words carefully: “He believes he’s on the side of the good guys.” This answer is, of course, fitting for a show that also features Benjamin Linus, Charles Widmore, the Others and “the freighter folk,” none of whom conform easily to good guy-bad guy characterizations.

EXACTLY HOW MUCH DOES HE KNOW ABOUT HIS CHARACTER?
While Reddick says he has been given key pieces of context on Abaddon’s backstory, which he declines to share, he says he prefers to “play to the mystery.” Well, it has certainly worked.

WHO DOES HE WORK FOR?
Wait, you mean he doesn’t work for Widmore? Maybe not. While Reddick declines to answer definitively, he says that we have been given information that could lead us to a conclusion. Further, he teases: “It’ll be crystal clear on [Wednesday] who he works for.” Like, maybe… Satan?

WHO WILL HE HAVE SCENES WITH?
Unlike Abaddon’s previous appearances, in which he had one-on-one encounters, this time he’ll get around more, it seems. “It’ll be with several of the main characters,” he reports. “He’s all throughout the episode.” The episode purports to show us what happened to Locke from the time he left the island via frozen donkey wheel until his death.

HOW DOES HE APPEAR AGAIN?
“Just as every single moment that Abaddon has shown up has been a surprise, how he shows up and how the character develops throughout the episode… just be prepared to be very surprised,” Reddick says.

We’re prepared! We’re prepared!

Question: I need to know what night and time Lost is on starting in Jan. ’09. I need to select which evenings I’m teaching next semester, and I prefer to watch Lost live, not on DVR two hours later. — Rosamaria
Ausiello: No decision has been made yet, but my gut is telling me it’ll return to Thursdays at 10 pm. In related news, remember my scoop last week about Lance Reddick returning for an episode? Well, my Hawaii mole reports that he was shooting scenes in a hospital with Charles Widmore. Theorizes Doc Jensen: “If you believe, as I do, that Charles Widmore has been chasing after the Island in order to cheat death by exploiting its time-travel properties, my guess is that Daddy Devilbucks was telling his mysterious henchman, ‘Would you please hurry your ass up and find me that Island?! I’m dyin’ here!’”

source : ew.com

***************

I have this nagging feeling that Lost from here on will focus on the Oceanic 6, at the expense of the people – my Sawyer included! – left on the island. Please tell me I’m wrong. – Lauren
Matt: I take great pleasure in telling you that you are wrong. I then laugh derisively in your general direction. Have no fear, Lauren, the left-behinders will get plenty of air time. In fact, a (probably well-tanned) setsider tells me that Elizabeth Mitchell, for one, has never had more to do and as such is busier than a one-armed paperhanger. But is she getting busy with Your Sawyer? That’s the question.

SPOILER ALERT! “LOST” returned to Oahu Cemetery this morning, perhaps a fitting location on the brink of Halloween. The historic graveyard previously appeared in the Season 2 episode “Lockdown,” as the not-quite-final resting place of Anthony Cooper.

It seemed, at first, a peaceful scene, with Matthew Abbadon (Lance Reddick) bringing a wheelchair-bound John Locke (Terry O’Quinn) to a modest gravesite for an intense conversation.

But things turned quickly when it came time to leave. Locke, in the back seat of a blue four-door sedan (I’d guess it was a late model Mercury Grand Marquis), waited as Abbadon loaded his wheelchair into the trunk. But no sooner had Abbadon closed the lid, when shots rang out. And Abbadon is hit.

Who’s gunning for Abbadon? And whose grave were they visiting?
