”WHATEVER HAPPENED, HAPPENED”: ON THE SET

As it happens, I visited the Oahu set of Lost back in January while they were shooting ”Whatever Happened, Happened.” Somehow, I escaped the experience without anyone letting anything slip about the Sayid-shooting-Young Ben thing or its outcome. But I did learn that the episode focuses on Kate. ”This is the linchpin episode for Kate this season,” Evangeline Lilly told me during a break in shooting. ”This is the episode where we understand why Kate made the decision to come back to the Island. The entire Kate story for season 5 is revealed here in this episode, so it’s been very cathartic to finally reveal to everyone what’s going on behind the mask for 11 episodes. What I always hope is that people would go back and re-watch episodes and think, ‘Oh, so that’s why she reacted like that in episode 5 of season 5!’ There’s so much more than meets the eye.” So tonight, we will get some insight into what happened to Aaron — and I’m pretty sure we’ll finally learn what Sawyer whispered into Kate’s ear during the season 4 finale !

Lost fans were in an uproar when reports alleged that Evangeline Lilly was leaving the show and auditioning for pilots that could launch this fall.

Her reps were quick to put out that fire, saying the story was absolutely false.

So TVGuide.ca decided to ask the actress herself, and hopefully, fans will be pleased by the answer.

“Why on Earth would I want to leave the best female role on television, in my humble opinion?” says Lilly with a laugh. “I’m happy at the show. The rumour started because the world was bored and they need a little drama, so they make things up, and that’s it; it’s very simple.”

Phew, right? The preview for the next episode of Lost has alluded to the long-awaited reunion of Kate and Sawyer (Josh Holloway), and Lilly dished on how she hoped it would go down, and what did indeed happen.

“For Evangeline, it was great fun because it’s been a long time since I worked with Josh, and it was great to have that reunion,” she reveals. “I was also nervous that they would write something that would undermine Kate’s character.

“The notion that she might come back to the island and start things up with Sawyer again after three years of being involved with Jack, I was very nervous that that would happen and warrant having to justify that. Because I’m the one who has to make that believable, and if you don’t believe it, then it’s hard to make other people believe it. But they didn’t do that.”

Lilly adds, “It’s a very intense thing for both of them; I don’t think Kate realized he was even alive still. The last time she saw him, he had jumped out of a helicopter, was swimming in an ocean, to an island that, minutes later, disappeared.

“So for all intents and purposes, Kate thinks he’s dead. She really is holding out a little measure of hope that he’s alive, but the skeptic and the realist within her is saying he’s dead. So to see him again, more than being intense and romantic, it’s just intense and shocking.”

NEW YORK – If you thought the tortured tropical romance between Sawyer and Kate was over, you might be surprised by a future episode of “Lost,” according to Evangeline Lilly, who stars as Kate on the ABC thriller.

“There is a reunion of sorts” awaiting the pair, says Lilly. Never mind that Kate seems to have escaped that mystical island while Sawyer, the handsome rogue played by Josh Holloway, was staying put.

Lilly calls their future encounter “very laced and complicated and simple.” But she’s careful not to spill any further details.

“I never know what I can and can’t say,” she explains.

Now in its fifth season, “Lost” airs Wednesdays.

As we head into a bit of a lull before the big mid-season premieres, the mind of this toobaholic began to wander into strange and bizarre territory.  As two of my favorite shows Lost and Mad Men are both on hiatus at the moment, I miss being mesmerized every Sunday night by Don Drapers’ uncomparable slickness as he continually figures out a way to “sell a hooker some p****,” as much as I miss watching Jack Shepards’ unparalelled arrogance get the Losties deeper and deeper into a pile of Dharma dung.  And so I began to wonder, what would happen if Don Draper were to take one of those unanncounced vacays of his and wound up on the island?  It would probably go down something like this…

- Our newest Lostie, stands up, brushes the sand off his Zegna suit and lights a cigarette, as Jack, Kate, Locke, Sawyer and the rest of the rag-tag gang look on in disbelief, suddenly incredibly self-conscious about their greasy locks and the tattered rags they’ve been wearing for the past 90 days or so.  Don ignores Hurley’s frantic yelling that he’s not on the manifest, tells Claire to cancel the rest of his appointments for the day, and walks off with Kate, who finds herself following him despite herself, presumably to the Swan Hatch.

- Desmond and Don are sitting in front a fire on the beach, sharing a bottle of whiskey. Desmond is perplexed and equally creeped out by Don’s persistant questions regarding why he prefers MacCutheon’s brand of Whiskey.

- Jack and Locke are having another one of their regularly scheduled power struggles.  Locke starts rambling about the island’s magical properties, only to be interuppted by Jack who launches into another one of his “live together, die alone” monologues. Don stands up, lights a cigarette and says he’s sticking with Jack, but insists he won’t be signing any contracts.

- Running low on cigarettes, Don has wisely struck up a friendship of necessity with Sawyer.  But after catching Kate walking out of Don’s swinging New Otherton bachelor pad one morning, Sawyer sucker punches our Mad Man as he walks across the quad for some of Locke’s special Dharma oatmeal with island spices.  Don, reels for a moment from the impact, calmly wipes the blood out from under his nose, and lights his last cigarette.  As he mulls over his new conundrum of where to aquire smokes, the pulse of “Jaters” and “Skaters” everywhere quickens, as a new subset of “Daters” begins to mobilize on Lost fan sites.

- Jack and the gang are in a state of apprehensive joy as they ready themselves for the arrival of the Freighter folk to whisk them back to civilization.  In preparation for his return to the advertising world, Don is drafting his great plan to save Oceanic…”Fly Oceaninc…You Never Know Where We’ll Take You!…..Oceanic, If Your Plane Crashes, We’ll Buy You a House!…”
