Mmmhmmm … I’ve made myself a squirrel child out of squirrel bones and some kind of fur and little button eyes. He’s real cute.

Obviously you can’t just disappear with your father in that cabin for a full season and not have repercussions, so is this what’s happened?
Yeah, she’s been three years, living on her own, making her own housing and food and protecting herself. The only person she’s had contact with as a friend is Locke — who’s not really Locke anymore. So any information that she’s been given about what’s going on with other people or the Island is from him. And there are maybe some things that are not the whole truth. He’s led her to believe that the Others have her baby at the Temple, so that’s been her whole plan this last three years, to get him back. Finding out that he’s off the Island and Kate is bringing him up is just like a complete, complete shock to her. So there’s an interesting relationship with Claire and Kate now — a combination of animosity, to say the least, and also respect and thanks. So that’s been fun playing with.

Kind of crazy to think that while Kate was raising Aaron, she was doing so with Jack, Claire’s brother.
[Laughs] Yes — we’re getting very incestuous on this show!

Well as long as Claire and Jack aren’t the ones sleeping together and having the baby, I guess I’m OK with it …
Oh, you didn’t read the next episode? [Laughs] I wouldn’t be surprised! That’s the season finale.

Let’s talk hair, because wow — this is a wig, right?
Yeah, thank god, right? I probably would’ve shaved it off by now if this was done to my hair everyday.

It’s very Rousseau-esque. Are we to assume Claire is just the new Rousseau of the Island?
In a respect. Their characters are very different. Traits are similar in a way, but [Claire] is still trying to figure out, at this point, what really is going on, what has happened in these three years, as opposed to just what she’s been told. That point of realization — like, hang on, maybe everything that’s been embedded in my mind is not correct — even though she’s so sure about it.

So since you’re the one playing it, do you think there’s a way she can snap out of it? Or will Claire just end up on the Island still crazy?
I mean, the evolution this season for her character is sort of coming back to who Claire was. You know, she’s still there, underneath it all, even though she’s pretty damn loopy. There’s still flickers of who Claire is and was, and maybe will be again. Or not.

Maybe all it would take is a Drive Shaft song and she’d be back to her old self!
Exactly! [Laughs] That’d be funny. ‘Wait … hang on!’

“It was the most ridiculous experience,” says Pattinson, flashing the sweet, shy smile those crowds hoped to see. “You’re trying to stay in character and you’re trying to walk down the street, but all those people keep reminding you that you’re not this character, you’re—”

“A show pony,” cracks de Ravin, and the two burst into laughter.

Although this duo could hardly be more different—de Ravin, 28, boasts the easy physical confidence of a onetime ballerina, while the slouchy 23-year-old Pattinson is all self-effacing bemusement—their effortless rapport is the emotional anchor of Remember Me. Pattinson stars as Tyler Hawkins, an alienated and confused young man from a wealthy family—”It’s not too Rebel Without a Cause,” he jokes—who gets involved with Ally (de Ravin), the daughter of a cop who arrested him after a street fight. Where Twilight treats him as the object of desire, a role that requires as much posing as acting, this character-driven drama brings out his most emotionally complex performance so far. Whether Tyler’s raging at his distant father, Charles (played by Pierce Brosnan), or charming Ally, he has a surprisingly deft comic touch; Pattinson is now the one doing the chasing.

“Rob and Emilie are gifted actors who really like each other,” says Remember Me‘s director, Allen Coulter. “And the movie reveals them in a whole new way.”

Which is precisely what both of them wanted—to show what they can do outside the juggernauts of Twilight and Lost.

Remember Me may well prove the big-screen breakthrough for de Ravin, an Australian still best known as the new mother, Claire, on Lost, a role that was often undemanding. “I was always holding the baby in every scene,” she says, “while everybody else was going off shooting people.” Here, she throws herself into the conflicted passions of Ally, a young woman who, eager to escape an adoring but overprotective father, struggles to break through her own veneer of toughness.

For his part, RPattz (as he’s known to his teen worshippers) is eager to start playing complicated human beings and not just heartthrobby vampires. Not that he doesn’t relish being Edward Cullen or feel loyal to his fans, but he still hasn’t figured out how to cope with being an international icon in an era when it seems impossible to escape the public eye.

“Everybody knows where everybody is,” he says. “The Twitter thing is unbelievable. I went out a couple of times with Pierce. He’s totally recognizable, and he makes no effort to tone it down. Some people were glancing over at us in the restaurant, and he just went over and introduced himself. And it does work. It dissipates all the attention.”

So, does Pattinson use this trick?

“Me?” he says, shaking those famously tousled locks, “I just crawl under the table.”

What’s your favorite part about being back?
The best has been scenes when we’re all together—like it was during the first season—which doesn’t happen a lot. Just hearing Naveen [Andrews, who plays Sayid] and Terry playing guitar in the jungle and hanging out in the middle of these beautiful banyan trees, swatting off mosquitoes…

We hear one of you Losties may turn out to have an extra-special connection to the island.
The ongoing question has been, “Why am I there, and what is my purpose?” This season brings out a lot of good and evil in people, with people being excited, nervous and scared when informed of their possible destinies.

What would you wish for Claire’s future?
I think Claire should be reunited with Aaron. That would be great. There has been so much theorizing about Aaron [being] the key to everything. I really don’t know, but I think there must be something special with him.

It has great potential to be very powerful, what this other reality, 815 not crashing and landing in Los Angeles, would have meant to people we have come to know in juxtaposition to who they are on the island,”

Terry O’Quinn : the flash sideways is confusing, but he says it doesn’t matter. He just wants a satisfying outcome to the series.
