Lost? Need a grease monkey?
Evangeline Lilly, star of the cult television series Lost, was born in Alberta, Canada, in 1979. First spotted by a modelling agency she worked as a film extra before winning the role of Kate Austen in the plane-crash drama. A devout Christian, she regularly joins aid missions to Africa and recently suggested she might quit acting. She has been voted one of the most desirable women on the planet by a string of lads’ mags but refuses to do gratuitous nudity Evangeline Lilly, the glamorous star of hit TV show Lost, is a hard girl to define. She swears like a sailor, can do 50 knuckle press-ups, can shin up trees (earning her the nickname Monkey) and will never turn down a dare. She spends her holidays on aid missions to Rwanda and eschews making workout videos in favour of rape-advice infomercials.
With so many sides to her personality it’s no surprise that she vacillates between patient driver and Vinnie Jones-style road rage. “Hawaii is paradise but with really slow drivers,” complains 27-year-old Lilly of the island where she spends nine months of the year filming Lost. “That laid-back ‘aloha’ mentality that everyone loves when they visit is so frustrating when you’re running late for work. There’s this total misconception in Hawaii that all the lanes are for driving and none are for overtaking, so if there are five lanes and five people all obeying the speed limit, they’ll drive side by side. I just hit them — accident after accident after accident. I’ve had one too many.” How many, precisely, is “one too many”? She laughs. “I’ve hit about eight or nine different things — dirt banks, snow piles, pedestrians, lampposts. Recently I accidentally hit a truck on set; I wanted to drive right up to my trailer and it was blocking my way for much too long. I was getting impatient and when I’m impatient on the road I just go. I cut in a bit too close — I didn’t realise it had happened. You know how you get used to something so you don’t notice it any more?”
Lilly’s weapon of choice is a Ford Escape SUV. Unlike your average Hollywood glamourpuss, she’s not afraid to get her elbows dirty if the engine isn’t running smoothly, and she knows more about what’s going on under the bonnet than do most of her male co-stars. As well as previous stints as an air hostess, a missionary and an extra, Lilly has spent time as a mechanic. “I didn’t like the idea that some jackass in a garage could take advantage of me,” she grins. “I wanted to learn about cars so I took a job as a grease monkey. I wasn’t a full-blown mechanic but I did oil changes and grease jobs on big-rig trucks. I was the only girl in the company and when I got there I found there was a record for the most cars done in one day. Within my first two months I killed the record. I single-handedly did 36 oil changes. “I’m far, far from a mechanic but I seem to date these really metrosexual men who always know less about cars than I do. If I get a flat tire when I’m with my boyfriend, I’m the one to change it. Without fail.”
Lilly split from her husband Murray Hone, an ice-hockey player and her childhood sweetheart, in 2005. The world’s press assumes her current metrosexual beau to be 30-year-old Dominic Monaghan, the Manchester-born star of The Lord of the Rings (he played the hobbit Merry Brandybuck) and Lilly’s co-star in Lost. The pair still refuse to confirm their relationship officially, but there are too many paparazzi pics of them kissing on Hawaiian beaches to take the denials seriously. Recent rumours suggest the pair are engaged and planning to marry this summer. But Monaghan may have good reasons for keeping his links to Lilly under wraps.
His rumoured fiancée confesses to having had a nasty surprise on a trip to Honolulu with an unnamed male companion. “I was driving with a male friend who needed to take a leak and there was nowhere to stop,” she explains, reddening a little. To spare her blushes, let’s just say there was an empty bottle in the car and a few days later Lilly got a nasty shock when she reached for what she thought was a bottle of mineral water.
The daughter of a teacher and a beautician, Lilly grew up in Alberta, Canada, and originally planned to be a diplomat. She got into acting after she was spotted by a scout for the Ford modelling agency while a student of international relations at the University of British Columbia. She used film and television-extra work to help pay for her studies, and her role as Kate Austen — the fearless female lead in Lost — was her first speaking part. The series about the survivors of a plane crash who find themselves stranded on a mysterious and menacing island started broadcasting on Channel 4 in 2005 and was bought by Sky last year. It attracts a particularly devoted fanbase and Lilly admits she finds her new-found fame difficult to deal with. Despite being nominated for a Golden Globe award this year, she has considered walking away from the show. “I am an incredibly private person,” says Lilly, who claims she rarely watches television and doesn’t even own a TV set. “It’s so exhausting to me that everywhere I go people know me or think they know me. If I could act and make the income I make and be anonymous, I would never want to leave the job.”
To add to the pressure, just before Christmas her SUV was broken into and the home she rents in Hawaii was burnt down in an accidental fire, destroying all her possessions. But she admits that filming on the Pacific island does have some advantages. “I miss tobogganing and snowboarding in Canada, but instead I’ve learnt to surf and become a water baby,” she says gleefully. “I have a kayak that sits in my back yard and I can kayak down to the ocean. I just really love nature. I love being active and being outside, and Hawaii is the place to do it year-round.” If you’re visiting, just remember to beware of the drivers — especially the ones in large Ford SUVs. On her CD changer I’ve been listening tothe Streets, although they don’t make much sense to me. They use the word “geezer” in the lyrics so I kept thinking: “Why is this song about old men?”, because we call old men geezers in Canada. And I thought if a girl was “fit”, it meant she was in good shape.
